OUR MISSION
Throughout history the curvaceous and voluptuous woman was considered the ideal.
Then came the 1960s and the “Twiggy” era of “Thin is In”. After 40 years of being
ridiculed and shunned by society’s beauty standards, the revolution has begun
to reclaim our title of “Curvy is Chic”.
The Curvy Chick Online experience was created for all of you women who love their
curves and have the confidence to say, “I’m a Curvy Chick!”. The Curvy Chick Company
advocates self-acceptance and a healthy lifestyle. It’s okay to be curvy, baby,
just be healthy and happy! We are ready to help those of you who seek the Curvy
Chick lifestyle and want to find sources for helping yourself achieve the ideal
curvy weight and Curvy Chick ATTITUDE!
We also want to reach out to that woman who continues to seek out means of finding
self-acceptance. We want her to know that SHE IS NOT ALONE! There are lots of
Curvy Chicks and we are here to help her find her self-acceptance, fashion style
and confidence.
The Curvy Chick Online also offers you a voice with which you can SHOUT to the
industry. Tell them you are tired of being treated like an outcast when you are,
in fact, the 65% of American women that are size 12 and up!
About Us
Heather Benjamin
One day in her late 20's while reading a magazine, a light bulb went off in Heather's
head and she realized that much of her low self-esteem and insecurities had come
from not just from other people’s comments, but the media's perception of "the
perfect women". They (the media and the fashion industry) were tormenting the
minds of women by deciding for the general public who is attractive, beautiful
and sexy. “HOW DARE THEM!” Heather raged. It was at that moment that Heather decided
to do for others as well as herself by TAKING A STAND!
In April of 2000, Heather made a decision to pursue a Plus Size Modeling career
in hopes of understanding the industry and figuring out how we could start making
changes to it. Now represented by seven model and talent agencies across the country,
Heather’s quest for knowledge has allowed her to work and get to know people inside
the industry as well as curvy women, in general, across the country. She has modeled
for major retailers and advertisers in the Southeastern United States.
In October of 2001, Heather met her future partner-in-curvy-advocacy in Cleveland,
Ohio. Her name is Candace Werginz and during that short time of meeting and sharing
with each other, Heather realized that they were destined to work together to
bring about change. After returning to her home in Florida, Heather immediately
began working on her dream, The Curvy Chick Company. It was just a few days later
that, new friend and now business partner, Candace, contacted Heather and together
they began what you are seeing today…The Curvy Chick Online.
In March of 2002, Marie Claire Magazine featured an article entitled "Is your
body type hard to shop for?" and Heather had the honor of being featured in the
article and commenting about the shopping habits of "Curvy" women. She may have
also commented about how she would sleep with her favorite fashion designer…but
that is another story and best told by the woman herself. Earlier this year, she
also had the honor of being chosen as a BBW Magazine Model Search Winner!
As if that was not enough, Heather began the process of pulling together a convention
for the Curvy Chicks of this country and the fashion industry that needs and wants
to serve them. Today, when she isn’t playing with her four dogs or on the phone
talking to a fashion designer or retailer to let them know what Curvy Chicks want,
Heather can be found glued to her computer trying to find new resources and advocacy
avenues for The Curvy Chick Online
Candace Palmertree-Werginz
A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Candace, just like any other young child
or teen, struggled with her weight and her appearance just like the next. However, her
struggle is a bit different. "I was obsessed with staying thin, so much so that
I found my diet consisting of crackers and diet coke", says Candace. During her
teen years she was a small 110 lbs standing at about 5'7". So it was a great
shock when later into her college years she started to develop. "I was mortified.
I thought I was out of control and couldn't stop". The battle to keep the weight
off continued not only as a physical challenge but a mental battle with herself
for the next 10 years. That was until, October of 2001, when Candace decided
to take control of her life and she attended The Plus USA Woman's Conference and
Pageant. The weekend was very uplifting for she met who would soon becomer her
partner in advocacy and in business, Heather. "Our meeting was brief. She sat
behind me at a meeting and our only conversation was, to say hello and to exchange
business cards". However, in that short time, an impression was left on one another
and upon Candace's return to Atlanta she emailed Heather and said "Let's talk".
In 2004 the "new" curvychick.com site was launched and what you see today comes from over 6 years of
work and re-working our focus. In December of 2007, Curvy Chick Inc. will launch a new shopping site called "ShopBombshellMagazine.com. Our purpose and focus has always been and will continue to bring
a sense of community to women with Curves and to educate our consumer on all plus size fashions.
Candace is a graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor's
Degree in Journalism. A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Candace has lived in
Atlanta for over 8 years.
Since its inception, The Curvy Chick has appeared and/or been featured on CNN
